Starting with the basics

When creating your healthier new year it is important to start with a healthy foundation of basic human nutrition that keeps our bodies working strong. We all need the basic nutrition whether we are active college students, working parents, or professional athletes. Wherever we may be on the activity or health spectrum,

we all need the basic building blocks for our musculoskeletal, neurological and immune systems.

One of the best ways to establish a stronger foundation of health is with a good multi vitamin.

Our food is not what it used to be.

Since the advent of mass agriculture much of the soil our food is grown in has been depleted and stripped of vital nutrients, thus leading to less nutrient dense fruits, vegetables and grains. In addition, food processing, heating, freezing, packaging, canning, shipping, food additives, preservatives and microwaving decreases the nutrient value even further. Thus, the broccoli that ends up on your dinner plate is not the same nutrient dense broccoli of 30 years ago. You cannot change this fact, but you can choose the type of multivitamin you may use to fill in those nutrient gaps.

Does your multivitamin stand up to the challenge?

Grab your vitamin bottle and take a look at the ingredients. Do any of these ingredients look familiar? FD&C Blue #1, FD&C Red#40 Aluminum Lake, FD&C Yellow #6 Aluminum Lake, Polyethylene Glycol, or Polyvinyl Alcohol. If they do look familiar, you may want to ask yourself why you are paying for a product that contains man made chemicals to give it enticing colors and chemical binders. Your body and your mind need and deserve better quality nutrition, not additional chemicals and fillers. Do the research on your multivitamin to see what you’re really purchasing and consuming.

What Kind of vitamin should you be choosing?

There are many quality vitamins currently available. Many can be purchased online, or at whole food grocery stores, vitamin stores, or naturopathic doctors’ offices. Be sure your vitamin has at least two of these three qualities:

  • 100% organic whole food or 100% whole food source

  • Cold pressed and/or processed

  • No artificial colors, fillers or preservatives

After you have done your research and found the perfect vitamin, be sure to consult your physician before you begin taking it. Some vitamins and nutrients can interact with and affect medications. Start your foundation of health off right this year, start with a quality multi vitamin.
